What is the date of this piece ? I assume John was the son ???
ReplyDeleteAndrew,
ReplyDeleteThis is the first Renz's ad published from October 14, 1867 thru October 16, 1867 in the Sacramento Daily Union. Yes, John was the son.
Warren found this ad while doing research for his upcoming book on western glasshouses. From his research Warren believes that Dr. Renz's Herb Bitters was introduced to the California Public on August 31, 1867. How's that for pinning down a date of the first Renz product!

Andrew,
ReplyDeleteI actually have an ad from August 31st, 1868 that states that Dr. Renz's Herb Bitters was introduced to the California market one year ago today.
It's interesting how some of our favorite brands (IXL, Cassin,s, Lacour's, Renz's) all debuted around the same time (late 60's)....
ReplyDeleteThere may be a longer run on the Dr Renz's than originally thought. I have dug broken and intact large letter varients in 1880s holes on numerous occasions. Could these large letter Renzicals be 80's ??
