Some of the bottles I saw change hands included a deep green Dr. Henley's IXL Bitters, a blue Lynde & Putnam iron pontil soda in a pristine un-cleaned condition, a rare Mack's Sarsaparilla Bitters San Francisco, a light green Pratt's Abolition Oil, a cobalt blue Wakelee's citrate and several scarce western beers.

 

 

 

 

And We Wonder Why Bottle Shows are Declining

I had an interesting phone call this morning. It was from the California State Board of Equalization. For those of you that are not familiar with the state BOE its the California Franchise Tax Board, you know, the folks that collect your sales tax if you have a legitimate business here in California.

The nice lady from the BOE asked me if I was selling at the Anderson Bottle Show this weekend. I replied yes, I am going to try and sell something at the show, but the possibility of making a sale is always in question. This reply sort of set her back for a moment but she recovered while I was wondering how in the heck did she know I had purchased a sales table at the Anderson Bottle Show.

 

It seems that since my business location is here in Downieville, and I am now going to sell in Anderson for the weekend, I will have to register the Fairgrounds in Anderson as a second location for my business. And to add icing to the cake every other bottle show in California that I sell at will have to be listed as another location for my business. Hell, my little chicken shit business is now becoming a multi location major red flag for the State Board of Equalization to zero in on.

 

The increasing pressure the State BOE is putting on small organized collectible shows is not a California only issue. If you sell at the Reno Bottle Show you will need a City of Reno sellers permit to the tune of $15.00 and as a seller you are supplied with a tax form that you fill out, and based on the sales you have claimed to have made, pay the tax right there and then at the show.

 

Do you think that the State BOE, the City of Reno or any other entity that is collecting taxes is going to get the sales tax on a mint green Drakes Plantation Bitters that sells at a bottle show? If you believe that the tax on that transaction is claimed I have a bridge you might be interested in.

 

I will be selling at Anderson this weekend right after I re-price my bottles to include the 7.5% sales tax the city of Anderson is asking for.

Downieville Trip | Part 3

This third post from Downieville is a grouping of some nice photography from Scott Selenak (FOHBC Photographer) at Rick and Cherry Simi’s house this past Friday night prior to the Downieville Antique Bottle Show. This event is held each year by the Downieville show hosts and includes appetizers, a wine tasting, the barbecue, tons of side dishes, a bottle cake, a real saloon and a mine shaft. The weather was great and the turn-out was as big as expected. Coco had a super time too working the crowd. The fourth and final post will be some of Scotts show photography.

Downieville Bottle Show Update

 

 

It’s hard to believe that it’s been 20 years since the inception of the Downieville Antique Bottle Show.  In 1993, the first show was held at the Downieville Community Hall.  It was a great success, and set the tone for future shows.  In the bottle collecting world, several Downieville shows were truly memorable.  The 1997 Western Whiskey Extravaganza was amazing.  Never before had such a collection of western bottles been featured in one display exhibit.  Valued over one million dollars, it was truly impressive!  Another great show was the 1998 show with a display featuring bottles with pictures or slug plates; many rare examples of early glass.

Once again, Downieville will host another top-notch show on Saturday, September 14.  Over 45 dealers from many western states, including, California, Nevada, Oregon, Utah and Washington will be selling at the show.  Items for sale will include antique bottles, insulators, gold rush items, advertising, saloon, mining and various western-related artifacts and go-withs.  There’s something for almost every kind of collector and available for prices anyone can afford.

The show is held at the Downieville School Gym and “Early Lookers” will be admitted at 8am for $10.  A free raffle ticket is included.  The show is FREE from 10am to 3pm.  Each year the show features a large composite display of “Western bottles”.  This years’ display highlights bottles, back bar bottles, tokens, and collectibles from "THE WESTERN SALOON”.  The saloon was usually the first commercial operation in mining camps and was always the main gathering place.  It played an important role in the community as well as being a social and psychological necessity.  Warren Friedrich from Nevada City is organizing the display once again this year.
