Eastern/Western Rosenbaums

Here is a nice looking large size Rosenbaums that should be eastern because of the dot on the base and the tapered top. I have a hard time believing that all dot based large size Rosenbaums are eastern blown. The color and character is spot on for early western glass and doesn't the top remind you of a Simons or Von Humodlts ?

  1. Your pieces are also dead on in color to eastern glass and the tapered collar top is typical of large Rosenbaums examples. One of the best examples of a western blown large Rosenbaums variant was the grass green example that was sold by American Bottle Auctions not long ago. It had every nuance of glass characteristics that I look for in early western blown glass.

  2. I don't think anyone will ever know who made some of these bottles..... Have you seen the third variant on the large size Rosenbaums with the square indented base ?

  3. I used to own that mid-sized Rosenbaum's with the square indented base. It is not as large as the "large" size but similar in form. Completely different mold and the only one I had ever seen. It was dug in VC. Wish I still had it!

  4. Yes I examined it when it was on display at ABA as part of the Grapentine collection for auction. Original mold altered by an iron insert placed in the mold to reduce the content size.

  5. I would lean towards the dot-base Rosenbaum's being Western. The colors that we have dug them in are spot-on to the early dot and star Western cylinders Sixths. Plus, the glass on the dot bases comes out of the ground very clean, which is unusual for most Eastern dug stuff we find out West. My dot-base Rosenbaum's that I dug, has every nuance and characteristic of classic 60s Western glass. If you want to see an Eastern NB Jacobs, check out the ones that only have NB Jacobs San Francisco embossed on them. The glass on those is very Eastern looking and comes out mostly stained.

  6. I agree, some if not all large could be western blown. The claret colored variant 3 looks as western as anything and so does Ap's gasoline puce example.

  7. How about a Rosenbaums shootout at one of the upcoming bottle shows ?
