Bitters lecture at the National

Here a some portions of the fine presentation that Warren Friedrich offered up at the National Show this past weekend. The room was fairly full, I had one empty seat in front of me, and was able to get most of Warren's discussion on video. My storage and battery power were not able to handle the overload of information presented at the bitters seminar. They actually titled it the Bitters Roundtable as several collectors presented information and stories relating to Bitters collecting.

  1. That was a really nice presentation Warren. How do you remember all those dates ?!
I hope you eventually also get to Mateo Keller and the California Wine Bitters too. There is a great lithograph drawing of his home and vineyard in the early L.A. county atlas. As you stated, most of the grapes and wine in the 1850s-60s came from SoCal. I will add a little to that: Anaheim was started in 1858 by German immigrants from San Francisco who came to SoCal specifically to establish a wine growing colony.
It was extremely prosperous until the late 1880s when the soil turned alkalai. They even established a landing along the coast,Anaheim Landing (present site of Seal Beach) for shipping and receiving to and from S.F. It is safe to say that a large portion of the grapes in these bitters that we collect came from there.

SoleAgent: Thanks a bunch for taping this ! as I was unable to attend.
