Here’s grouping of some of the Western blown inks we‘ve dug in California over the years, circa 1868-74. The large master is e.r. and embossed “PACIFIC GLASS WORKS” on the base. It has an applied top that looks like a Western bitters or 5th with a pinched pour spout.
The school house with no panel embossing is the rarest of the aqua Western blown house inks. It has a steeper roof pitch and comes in deep greenish aqua like some of the early S.F. meds.

The diamond pattern embossing with JT and embossed Pacific Glass Works reflects glass products from John Taylor either made for him by PGW or during his ownership of PGW.
ReplyDeleteThe diamond pattern contains the letters JT ? Have you come up with new research regarding this ? So what is the age range you can put on all the PGW diamond pattern bottles? Has anyone seen any other PGW bottles with this besides the master ink and the apothecary bottles?
ReplyDeleteThe age range would probably either not extend past the sale of PGW in August of 1875 to C.Newman & Co.,or past the time that PGW operated simultaneously with SFGW from August 1875 thru December 1875.
ReplyDeleteNo more research necessary. Check Warren's book re Taylor. Then, we have other examples of bottles blown in the same mold with a clearly readable JT embossed on the base. He was the only "glass man" on the West coast who embossed his personal identity on a bottle, to my knowledge.

ReplyDeleteI have seen two others and heard of at least one other one that was accidentally broken by a collector. Too bad nobody put an initial on the western star.....
ReplyDeleteThere is also a un-embossed Western 5th with the same diamond as the master ink.
